Touched by Cancer

I could have easily written about this topic, but felt it deserved more attention than my usual posts. The first time I heard the phrase ‘Touched by Cancer’ was at my mom’s funeral. She was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 1999 and passed away in 2001. I’ll never forget hearing the minister use that phrase to sum up my family’s pain and grief. Touched? Are you kidding me???

  4. Michelle Said,

    Hi Kate -

Loved the “little podcast” I have been reading your blog — I found it through JH Pancreatic Cancer Board. My life has been turned upside down b/c of my mom being diagnosed and subsequently dying from PC - so I agree with you that “touched” is way to frou frou. I hesitate to mention that my mom died of the same disease that you have - but everyone is different and it is not like you are not aware of the facts. But I wanted to let you know that I know where you are coming from to some degree. It is similar to when people say - oh you lost your mom — well no I did not lose her - I wish she was lost - b/c then I could find her - people have to find these nice euphamisms to make themselves feel better I think.

Without knowing your exact story — I can say that it is obvious that whatever you are doing is working! It is great to see an example that even with PC - you can live with cancer.

I am sure you have your doom and gloom moments - but with what you have shared here on your blog - it is really nice to see.

    Keep on fighting!

Hi Kate - you haven’t heard from me before, but I found your original blog from a link on Leroy Sievers page. I just listened to your podcast, and I have to tell you that hearing you speak brought life to your convictions and statements. I’m a breast cancer survivor, and I continue to be strengthened by your thoughts and others who put words to things I’ve experienced and felt - much better than I could ever do. Also - I loved the horse videos - I have a horse and it was/is very therapeutic to spend time with her. Thanks for all the sharing you do!

  6. John Said,

Touched? oh yea. Loved the podcast message. Not only are you a wordsmith but also a “voicesmith”.
are we time travelers??????????? your podcast was at 2:20AM and here i read it at 3am on the following Wedesday. MY PC & Whipple was 5.6 years ago and my nights are on their own schedule ever since. It was a pleasure to hear your podcast tonight/morning. Thanks and hang in there.

  7. Diana Said,

    Great site, Kate!

Couldn’t agree more about the misnomer of being ‘touched by cancer.’ It’s a full-time job — and then some!

Stay hydrated and make a great rest of the week!

  8. Ann Said,

    Hi Kate,

Congratulations on your first “Katecast”! I certainly identify with your message. I was diagnosed with PC in May. Since then my son has been so “touched” by cancer that he withdrew from college this semester to come home. My husband has been so “touched” by cancer that stress and the impact it has on his body landed him in the hospital. My daughters are so “touched” by cancer that their lives have been turned upside down in other ways. Not to mention how I’ve been “touched” with chemo and daily radiation. Regardless, our bond is stronger than ever, and I’m alive, kicking, and finding joy daily.

  9. Scott Said,

    Hey Kate,

I know I commented on the great new look yesterday, but I just got around to listening to this (damn short attention span). I’m tearing up at my desk. It is really amazing. Wonderful work. Thanks so much for sharing.

P.S. Hope you’re keeping your speeding off the backroads;-)
