Happy Belated Birthday Kate!! You are Awesome!! And, I totally agree with your friend Jason–some of the best gifts we do get come in strange packages!! Also, I do believe that God has a reason for everything–it may seem to not make sense at the time–or, for a long time after–but, things do happen for a reason.
